Founded in 1926 by Adriano Ferreira Marques, Great-Grandfather of the current owner, Joalharia Ferreira Marques [Ferreira Marques Jewellers] marks its 96th anniversary in the glamorous Praça do Rossio, right in the heart of the City of Lisbon. Passionate about jewels, this family has been involved in the detailed manufacture of Jewellery and Goldsmithery since the end of the XIX century. JoiaPro visited the capital to talk with José Filipe Maio, current owner, and Paula Gião, business development manager.
The History of Joalharia Ferreira Marques is Within Us
Joalharia Ferreira Marques was born of a traditional family from Porto that, in 1874 founded Topázio, mainly recognised for its “Art de la Table” pieces. At the beginning of the 1920s, one family member, Adriano Ferreira Marques, with his immense passion for gems and jewellery, decided to travel to Lisbon and start a new era for the then traditional family: Joalharia Ferreira Marques was born on the 22nd of July 1926. Four generations have passed but glamour still prevails. José Filipe Ferreira Marques Guerra Maio is the “bien veillant” (guardian) of this legacy that continues its projected journey, sometimes enduring tough times due to the economic difficulties that have arisen over the years. The jewellers was, and continues to be, a site of architectural interest and beautiful jewellery, previously all its pieces were designed by hand in sketch books and later manufactured manually with love and commitment. With great pride we can say that love brought us to this point today, with dedication, manufacturing and perfection continuing to be our principal goals.
What Differences can be seen between Today’s Market and the Market of a Century ago?
Probably none. Customers continue to want custom-made jewellery, they look for art and beauty and their eyes find in the glamour of every piece. “Dreams control reality” and, in this luxurious sector, this saying will always be true.
