“A Ourivesaria Popular no Norte de Portugal e a sua vivência em Viana do Castelo” is the new book by Rosa Maria Santos Mota.

On the 19th of May, the CITAR researcher – Centre of investigation for Science and Technology of Arts in the Portuguese Catholic University – launched a new literary work which addresses the “cultural and historical phenomenon of folk gold”.

The author geographically analyses the “evidence and impact in the region”, identifying the “characteristics” and highlighting the “importance of its passage between generations”.

The Viana do Castelo City Hall joined the event, with the edition and presentation of the work that took place in the Municipal Theatre Sá de Miranda.

According to the event’s promoter, the edition, classified by the Mayor as a “well organised and systematised journey through the stories, the workshops, the endowments and the inheritances”, includes several chapters dedicated to gold, namely “Popular gold and the gold of Viana”, “From the workshops to the family chests”, “Experiences associated to popular gold” or “When, in Viana, Gold takes to the streets”.

The edition “A Ourivesaria Popular no Norte de Portugal e a sua vivência em Viana do Castelo da autoria de Rosa Maria dos Santos Mota,” was also presented by Gonçalo de Vasconcelos e Sousa Full professor at the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University.

Researcher at CITAR, Rosa Maria Mota’s research work focuses on “popular gold and its course in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the North of Portugal, with special incidence in Viana do Castelo”.
