“Our country will always be our top priority”
These are the words of Maria Marinho, the current manager of António Marinho, a company founded by her Father, in 1996. Maria Marinho comments that the Portuguese market is strong, “but it is undergoing a period of uncertainty”.However, she adds, “we are not going to let ourselves be discouraged”.
How do you View the Portuguese Sector?
Our country will always be our top priority. It is where we came from and it is this market that has given us the ability to grow. My perception of the Portuguese is that, especially after the pandemic, there has been a digital evolution. I think it is a strong market, but it is going through a period of uncertainty and this may be reflected in consumers’ purchasing priorities as we are talking about luxury goods and not basic necessities. However, as I said, we are not going to let ourselves be discouraged. We continue to receive positive responses and interest in our pieces and we are not going to stop investing in Portugal.
What is the Status of Filigree and Jewellery in Gondomar?
I think the relationship between filigree and the city is getting stronger and stronger. There has been a commitment in this direction that has increased the visibility of Rota da Filigrana, which has produced positive results. We have seen the strength of filigree in Gondomar, particularly with respect to tourism, and they are also doing well in exporting to other markets. Now, with the introduction of the new “Gondomar Original Jewellery” stamp, an initiative of the Gondomar City Council, we have felt a boost in the recognition of jewellery in Gondomar that goes beyond filigree. This initiative has been warmly welcomed and will be an advantage for everyone involved in this sector.
