The Royal Treasure Museum, in the west wing of the Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon, was inaugurated last Wednesday, 1st of June, marking the conclusion of a work that lasted 226 years, which will host a thousand jewels from the Portuguese crown.
The exhibition which, in the words of the director of the National Palace of Ajuda, José Alberto Ribeiro, shows “the best in Portuguese and European decorative arts from the 16th to the 20th century”, is divided into 11 sections: gold and diamonds from Brazil, coins and medals from the Crown, jewellery from the National Palace of Ajuda collection, honorific orders, royal insignia, objects for civil use in carved silver, private collections, diplomatic gifts, royal chapel, Germain Service and trips from the royal treasury.

The collection of the Royal Treasury Museum is located in one of the largest vaults of the world – 40 metres long, 10 metres wide and 10 metres high –, with three floors, with sophisticated security and video surveillance equipment, five-tonne armoured doors, showcases with temperature and humidity control and bulletproof glass.
The museum also has technical areas, a management support service, a conservation and restoration laboratory, two temporary exhibition rooms, a multi-purpose space and an educational service.
The development of this museological project involved the General Administration for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), the Lisbon Tourism Association (ATL) and the municipality.
