The Original Sardine, the sardine that was Portuguese before it was a trend

Long before the internet called it “Sardine Summer,” the sardine was already part of the Portuguese summer. It has always been in the streets, at popular festivals, depicted on azulejo tiles, painted on ceramics, and served at the table. More than just a fish, it has become one of the greatest symbols of our identity.

It wasn’t until the summer of 2025 that the rest of the world seemed to make the same discovery. Sardine Summer arrived with pendants, earrings, bags, and patterns inspired by the fish, and took over social media. Harper’s Bazaar and Who What Wear singled it out as one of the season’s trends and, a year later, continue to point to marine motifs, especially in jewelry, as one of the most relevant trends.

But this story, long before it was fashion, was already ours. Sardine fishing shaped communities all along the Portuguese coast and earned a place in popular culture, art, and the collective imagination. The iconic sardines have appeared in the interpretations of Portuguese artists, designers, and brands, becoming a true national symbol.

It is also from this heritage that Portugal Jewels draws its inspiration. Before the sardine conquered social media, the brand was already turning it into jewelry, reinterpreting one of the greatest icons of Portuguese culture through contemporary design. In Portugal, this trend never needed to arrive. While the world was discovering it, here it was already deeply rooted.
